Learn the performance of medieval chant and song during a week-long retreat in one of Ireland’s most spiritual settings.
The Kylemore International Chant School aims to provide a living space for those who wish to experience the fullness of a spiritual retreat and gain a practical and theoretical understanding of Gregorian chant and medieval song in the quiet surroundings of one of Ireland’s most spiritual settings. The School is led by early music performers and scholars who have extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of the repertoire and its practice.
Beginner and advanced level courses are available and all course participants will immerse in a week long programme that includes learning chant orally and from medieval and modern notations. The course will also offer workshops on Irish traditional religious song and celtic spirituality with celebrated Irish singer Noirín Ní Riain. Participants will benefit from vocal technique masterclasses, optional piano lessons with Sr. Karol O Connell and daily somatics classes with our dancer in residence.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore the extensive grounds of the Kylemore estate with its Victorian Walled Gardens, Gothic Church and restaurant and craft shop. Trips to places of interest in Connemara may be arranged through course facilitators.
Course participants are invited to attend concerts during the week and the programme will culminate with a performance by the chant school participants, faculty and the Benedictine community at Kylemore Abbey.
