Although it is known that songs were sung to the accompaniment of the vihuela, or Spanish lute, in 15th-century Spain, no written examples survive. Ariel Abramovich’s painstakingly made reconstructions peel back the courtly layers from two of the most sophisticated Spanish Renaissance polyphonic manuscripts – the Cancionero de Palacio and the Segovia Manuscript – to reveal the beauty of the solo songs lying within.
