“Principe della Musica” The music of Orlande de Lassus, a choral workshop directed by Gabriel Crouch.
To complement the concert by Gallicantus on Friday evening we are delighted to welcome their director, Gabriel Crouch, to direct a workshop for singers on the music of one of the greatest masters of Renaissance polyphony, Orlande de Lassus.
This workshop is open to singers of all voices but participants will find some sight-singing ability helpful. Music will be provided on the day (cost included in your workshop fee). We hope to include excerpts from Lagrime Di San Pietro – a cycle of madrigali spirituali performed in Gallicantus’ Friday evening concert – his Prophetiae Sibyllarum, a French Chanson and a motet. For further information and the booking form (last date for applications May 16) please see the NEEMF website.

The workshop was brilliant. Amazing music by Lassus coupled with Gabriel’s scholarship (worn lightly) and engaging personality meant we had an enjoyable and thoroughly rewarding few hours of music-making, giving us a real insight into how best to perform stylistically different pieces by the same composer. Coupled with practical singing tips, this all resulted in a disparate group of around 30 participants beginning to sound like a coherent ensemble by the end!

An amazing day! Gabriel was so engaging and made what was quite tricky. Music accessible to a very disparate group of singers without seeming patronising. It was fun, and by the end of the day we were making a reasonable sound. Do have him back next year – I’m sure we would all return for more! Thank you
