This programme demonstrates William Byrd’s mastery in writing for the voice (through a wide range of styles) whilst focusing on works that have particular importance to Byrd’s own beliefs as a recusant Roman Catholic in Elizabethan England. Included are familiar works – the Five-part Mass, Vigilate and Ne irascaris, Domine – and one that you almost certainly won’t know, the incredibly haunting unpublished setting of O salutaris hostia.
