Ex Cathedra’s charity project Singing Playgrounds has been awarded with a Music Teacher Award for Excellence. The choral ensemble came away with the prize for Best Musical Initiative.

The judging panel described Singing Playgrounds as: ‘A project whose effective simplicity is matched only by its scope and potential. Implemented in 500 schools and counting, it has led to genuine lightbulb moments for headteachers – who now realise the strength that lies in making music in the playground and in the community.’

Singing Playgrounds has seen over 100,000 children take part throughout the UK and internationally – reaching as far as New Zealand and Thailand. The project encourages school communities of both teachers and students to sing.

Rhinegold Publishing’s Music Teacher Awards for Excellence took place on 7 February at The Barbican. The awards recognise the achievements of organisations in the music education industry. The shortlist for the 2014 ceremony was compiled by the editorial team of Music Teacher magazine from the 200 nominations submitted by the public.
