A new six-part series about the history of Western music from composer Howard Goodall is to be broadcast on the BBC.

Howard Goodall’s Story of Music will examine the beginnings of music and its journey through to the modern age.

Episode one ‘The Age of Discovery’ takes an overview of the development of music from the Stone Age to the seventeenth century, looking at the Italian monk who is thought to be the first person to effectively keep a written record of music created, how Gregorian Chant developed over several centuries, and the creation of the love song in the fifteenth century and much more besides.

In conjunction with the television series Goodall, along with presenter Suzy Klein, will broadcast The Story of Music in 50 Pieces on BBC Radio 3. The music pieces, selected by Goodall, will be under discussion for the way in which they helped to shape the history of music.

Howard Goodall’s Story of Music starts on 26 January at 9.30pm on BBC 2. The Story of Music in 50 Pieces will broadcast from 28 January until 1 March on BBC Radio 3.
