The BBC Concert Orchestra (BBCCO) has launched a competition searching for the next generation of composers, asking entrants to ‘remix’ a baroque classic.

Baroque Remixed, as the competition is called, challenges applicants to rewrite the Rondeau from Purcell’s Abdelazer Suite. The competition wants young composers to bring a modern interpretation to the Purcell piece, with entrants encouraged to use a range of elements, including electronic, jazz, or folk sound worlds.

The competition is open to postgraduates and fellows studying composition in the UK. A shortlist of six composers will take part in a workshop with the BBCCO in January 2013. In March, two finalists will have their pieces performed at the Roundhouse, London, by the BBCCO, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3.

The closing date for entries is 26 November. For more information about the competition, visit www.bbc.co.uk/orchestras/concertorchestra/about/news/baroque_remixed.shtml
